From today’s NW Herald:
“Police do not believe Larson and the Richmond woman in her mid-20s knew each other. They were unable to find any connections, Richmond Police Officer Pam Hewett said.
The woman received a series of text messages from a phone number she didn’t recognize in March, Hewett said. When she called the number to tell the sender he or she had the wrong number, the sender identified himself as Ken and the communication turned sexual, Hewett said.
The woman told the man to stop messaging her, but the text messages started again the next day. When she called a second time, the man told her he would be waiting outside for her. That worried the woman, because she was working at a public establishment, Hewett said.”

We at Turning Point sometimes struggle with keeping our supporters and donors informed on what goes on here.
Our client’s privacy is sacred. We don’t even identify current or former clients much less share the details of their situation. So sometimes it’s hard to spread the word about the wonders achieved by the Turning Point advocates.
One recent shelter resident wrote a thank you note to the staff and it painted such a clear picture of what is accomplished here every day that I asked if I could share it. She graciously agreed.
Please click below for a very brief presentation of one shelter resident’s experience, in her own words.

ME! Joe Kvidera, Events Coordinator at Turning Point has SHAVED off his beard and is starting it all over again BeCAUSE I realize we all need to confront violence against women & children in McHenry County.

When I first came to work at Turning Point, someone asked me, “What makes you want to do that? Isn’t domestic violence a women’s problem?” I immediately replied “No, it’s not a woman’s problem or a man’s problem, it’s a human problem.”
And I hope you feel the same. Turning Point serves about 1800 victims a year who come to us trying to end the violence in their homes. 1800- from our little McHenry County! All of our lives are diminished by this problem- whether it’s the coworker who misses work due to her injuries, or the peaceful neighborhood evenings interrupted by the police visits to that house down the block or even just the unease of knowing that domestic abuse is taking place, unseen, in our communities, our neighborhoods, even our extended families.
I’m glad to tell you’ve we’ve come up with a way for guys to help: A great new fundraiser called Beards Because. I’m enclosing complete information, but briefly it’s a fun way to help out and spread the word. We’re asking you and other men across our area to stop shaving for a month- to grow a Beard Because….
· Because too many women are trapped in violent relationships. Because domestic violence is everyone’s problem.
· Because your life (or someone you loved) was touched by abuse.
· Because everyone should feel safe in their own home.
We’ve hoping that you will grow that beard and collect donations from friends, family & coworkers in support of your hair-raising efforts to combat domestic violence. We’ll be kicking this event off on July 2 and wrapping it up as part of our huge annual fund raiser with Star 105.5 “Take a Stand for Turning Point” on August 7th.
