Jack Franks & TP Executive Director Jane Farmer
Turning Point, McHenry County’s Advocate for Victims of Domestic Violence, has received a $25,000 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation to help fund its programs for child victims of Domestic Violence. The Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation was incorporated in 1950 to address needs in Arts, Education, Health and the Environment. The foundation is keenly interested in making an immediate difference and when it considers grant applications, feels that the single most important question to be addressed is: What difference will this project make for those who participate in it?
Development Director Mary Anne Weltch describes how Turning Point came to apply for the grant: “State Representative Jack Franks called our attention to this grant opportunity and it was one we weren’t aware of. We’ve experienced a very large influx of children under five since our shelter opened. This grant allows us to add a children’s advocate who works with these young children to diminish the consequences they suffer from the trauma of violence in their family and increase the family bonds between children and their non-offending parent.” The Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation was specifically seeking a program that would serve children who have been exposed to domestic violence, enhance the mother-child relationship and include a Domestic Violence specific parenting education component.
“This grant will enable us to provide counseling and services for the youngest and most vulnerable victims of Domestic Violence” explained Weltch. “This program will have the objective of preventing future abuse and breaking the cycle of violence and assist children in coping with the physical, emotional and mental trauma of abuse.” Turning Point was founded in 1981 and serves over 1800 clients a year with individual and group counseling, legal and non-legal advocacy and a partner abuse intervention program. In 2007, Turning Point opened the county’s only secure shelter for victims of Domestic Violence. The agency’s mission is “To Confront Violence Against Women And Children in McHenry County.”
Jane Farmer, Executive Director of Turning Point said, “We are most grateful, on behalf of the children, to Representative Jack Franks and the Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation.”

Kristy Isonhart of the Mental Health Resource League presents a $6,000 check to Jane Farmer, Executive Director of Turning Point to fund mental health therapy.
Turning Point, McHenry County’s advocate for victims of domestic violence, received a $6,000 Grant from McHenry County Mental Health Resource League. This award will provide mental health therapy “scholarships” for clients whose past emotional, physical, or sexual abuse interferes with their current lives. This funding also supports mental health therapy for current child victims of domestic violence who exhibit severe symptoms of trauma. Many of these clients would not have access to individual therapy if not for the Turning Point’s mental health program.
The Mental Health Resource League for McHenry County was founded in 1967 as an auxiliary to the McHenry Mental Health Center. The all-volunteer league has a membership of over 100 men and women who raise funds to help McHenry County mental health agencies supply the services needed in areas such as crisis hotlines, youth programs, abuse, addictions and mental retardation. Since it’s inception, MHRL has awarded over $3.5 million to McHenry County agencies. The MHRL sponsors Fair Diddley and Fall Diddley and this grant was made possible by funds raised at these events.
Turning Point was founded in 1981 with a mission to confront violence against women & children in McHenry County. In 2007, the agency opened the county’s only secure shelter for victims of domestic violence.
