Light of Christ Men Have Day of Service at Turning Point

conrad-bilgren The Men’s group from Light of Christ Church in Algonquin had a “Day of Service” at Turning Point, working on the grass, flower beds, trees and grounds at the Woodstock Domestic Violence agency.

This is the third year the Men’s Group has had a clean up day at Turning Point and this year, 16 men participated in the event. The group took out a dead tree, laid mulch in the flower beds, trimmed hedges and painted, among other chores. The group was lead by John Wright, who has organized the clean up day for all three years. Light of Christ church was honored for its service to Turning Point with the agency’s “Partnership” award in 2008.

These are some pictures of the group, hard at work.

Brother, can you spare a Cell Phone?

old-cell-phone1

Turning Point is lucky to be the beneficiary of cell phone drives from time to time.  There are collection boxes in the Village Halls of Lakewood and Cary and also in the McHenry Library. And, periodically, people stop by our offices on Route 14 outside Woodstock to drop off a phone to us directly. I’m sure people wonder “Are these phones really worth recycling?”

The answer is YES, absolutely! As we say in our periodic press releases asking for used cel phones: “This Cell Phone collection produces multiple positive effects: Donors can eliminate the clutter of non-working phones from their home and also help to support Turning Point, as well as keep these phones from ending up in land fills where their electronic components can be hazardous to the environment.”

Today we received notification that for the first three months of 2009, Turning Point has received $1392 for cell phones we have submitted for recycling! WHOO-HOO! Keep those cell phones coming!

Consider a cell phone drive:

  • It’s a great project for kids- send a flier home with brownies or Boy Scouts and set up a collection point at a local supermarket or library.
  • You can collect cell phones at your office- send out notification that Friday is “Cell Phone Recycling Day” and let every employee who brings an old cell phone wear jeans that day! See if the boss will donate a prize for the person who brings in the oldest, largest cell phone! (We do indeed recycle phones that look like the one in the picture above!)
  •  At your church or club, ask your members to bring in old cell phones the next time you meet.

You can call JOE at (815) 338 8081 to set up a cell phone drive.

Congresswoman Melissa Bean requests funding for Turning Point

“ Below are Congresswoman Melissa Bean’s (IL-08) funding requests for FY2010.  As part of her commitment to increase transparency in government, Congresswoman Bean in previous years has posted a list of all funding secured in appropriations bills. This year, Congresswoman Bean is posting a list of all funding requests, earlier in the Appropriations process.  The projects and amounts requested do not guarantee funding.  After requesting priority projects, the House Appropriations Committee considers requests from all Members of the House and decides which projects get funding and at what levels. Therefore, the list of funding requests below cannot be accurately used for a year-to-year comparison against previous lists.

Law Enforcement Advocacy Partnership (LEAP)

  • Recipient: Turning Point, Inc., located at P.O. Box 723, Woodstock, Illinois 60019
  • Description: $300,000 through the Department of Justice’s Juvenile Justice account to the LEAP program to support the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) at the local level.  This is an appropriate use of taxpayer dollars because LEAP is a collaboration between 15 police departments, the State’s Attorney and Turning Point that provides crisis intervention, emergency shelter, overnight and daily orders of protection, domestic violence training for police, and advocacy in court for domestic violence victims. “

Keep your fingers crossed.  Or better yet call your congressman and urge this request be granted

Rep. Bean’s website (and full list of her requests) is here.

Jessica Brannam still winning for TP!

jessica-brannam

McHenry’s Jessica Brannam is a mighty impressive young lady- she’s 18, she’s a race car driver and she’s winning for Turning Point! Jessica came to take a tour of Turning Point in 2005 after hearing about the shelter, and decided to donate her race winnings to help Open the Doors. Since then, she’s been a tireless supporter. Maybe you met her at the Radiothon when she came out (in the rain) with one of her cars and signed autographs. Race car driver’s suits are usually covered with patches & logos of their sponsors and supporters- Jessica wears a Turning Point logo on her suit!

As Executive Director Jane Farmer said to the NW Herald back in 2006, Jessica’s support of Turning Point is “Amazing!  We can talk to kids at Turning Point, and here is someone who cares about what goes on with you, and she’s 15.”

We were thinking of Jessica because she sent in some more winnings and also because her racing season is starting up. You can see her racing schedule and learn a  lot more about this remarkable young lady at her website, here. As she says “I may be small…but I can HAUL!”
