Father files wrongful death lawsuit in shooting

“WOODSTOCK – The father of a former McHenry woman whose ex-boyfriend allegedly ran her car off the road and fatally shot her in Colorado is suing the ex-boyfriend’s estate.

Tyler James Martin, 36, formerly of Wonder Lake, shot himself Feb. 20 in Chicago after barricading himself in the vestibule of a family member’s Chicago home. Victor Freund, father of his ex-girlfriend Amber Cremeens, 34, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Martin’s estate this week in McHenry County courthouse.”

Commentary: The budget game

From WNIJ in DeKalb: “Budget troubles are far from over for social service agencies in Illinois. The budget agreement in Springfield may have spared the organizations from a “doomsday scenario,” but they still can’t be sure how much money they’ll get from the state.

Pam Wiseman is the executive director of Safe Passage, a domestic violence shelter in DeKalb. She’s one of the thousands of people who have spent the summer on a budget roller coaster. She takes us along for the ride.”

Congrats to United Way!

“The United Way of Greater McHenry County surpassed its local fundraising goal by more than $102,000, and 26 area agencies will receive funding.

The organization hoped to raise $1.05 million locally, but raised more than $1.15 million, according to a news release.

“To have your campaign not only exceed your goal but also exceed what you raised last year was … a demonstration of the way people in the community care about each other,” said Dave Barber, executive director. ”

It’s great to see county residents attempt to bridge the gap in state and federal funding. You can read the whole story here.

A Tastefully Simple way to support Turning Point

perfectparmesanbiscuitmix

A great message from Judy Beaudion about her fund raising efforts selling Tastefully Simple.  You can visit the Tastefully Simple website,  place your order and “When you get to the Shopping Cart, simply click Find Host/Event and type in Jenny Boo”. Judy is donating 50% of her proceeds to Turning Point in honor of Jennifer Beaudion. She’s hoping to raise $555 which is the cost of shelter for a woman for one week. A great goal.

Legislators, Quinn approve debt-heavy state budget

We don’t know yet exactly what it means, but we have a budget.

“State lawmakers Wednesday approved a desperation budget that attempts to borrow the state’s way out of trouble and ensures that workers and service agencies get paid.

Two weeks into the new fiscal year, an 11th-hour budget hashed out during the past few days by Gov. Pat Quinn and legislative leaders successfully passed both houses and was signed into law.

Key to the spending plan is the borrowing of nearly $3.6 billion to meet the state’s pension obligations and free up funds elsewhere. About $2.2 billion of that will go toward restoring most state funding for ailing social service agencies, with Quinn’s discretion as to where the remainder will be spent.”

We’ll keep you posted.  You can read the whole story at the NW Herald.

Turning Point Staff Day

staff-day-001

It’s an annual event- the TP staff takes a day to engage in some team buidling and learn more about each other.  What did we learn? Well among other things, a lot of people wish they played piano, Turning Pointers want to visit Italy and at least one of us expects to be reincarnated as a GOOSE!
