Oh come on! It’s not Christmas without those Salvation Army Kettles!
“MAUMEE, Ohio — A man who claimed to hate Christmas shoved a Salvation Army bell ringer to the ground and swiped one of the charity’s red kettles stuffed with hundreds of dollars, police said.
The bell ringer, an unemployed woman, tried to pull the kettle away from the man Saturday evening, but he pushed her down and said, “I can’t stand you and your bell-ringing. I hate Christmas,” police said. The bell ringer chased him into a store parking lot before he tossed the kettle into the back of a stolen pickup truck and sped away, police said.
An empty kettle was found a day later. Police arrested Shawn Krieger of Toledo on Monday morning and charged him with robbery.”
Be kind to YOUR Local bell-ringer! You can read the story here.

The Chicago Tribune has a great idea- “How about transforming this into a Season of Gratitude, one in which you put into practice the daily habit of being thankful, and doing so in ways unmistakable?
We’ve created a get-you-started game plan — actions you can take or thoughts to consider — that stretches from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Give ‘em a whirl. Or invent your own.”

Some good news for a change, from today’s Chicago Tribune:
“As 2008 drew to a close, Family Rescue knew it would have to dig in for several hard months. The weak economy had dealt a heavy blow to United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, a major funder of Family Rescue, which provides services to victims of domestic violence.
“We didn’t feel the hit until this year, but we knew it was coming,” said Stephanie Scott, director of human resources at Family Rescue. To prepare, the nonprofit left several vacant positions unfilled and streamlined some programs, hoping it could avoid big cuts in services.
Now, as companies wrap up their annual workplace giving campaigns, organizations like Family Rescue are feeling a bit better. Family Rescue was able to rehire seven employees who were laid off this year and, because of an expected uptick in funding, is planning to add two positions.
“Right now things seem to be a little bit more on the upswing,” Scott said.” You can read the good news here.

This time of year we (happily) get a alot of inquiries from people who want to do “something” for Turning Point Clients. I thought I’d take a minute to update you on our holiday needs:
- We do run a Christmas Program for our client families to make sure that they have gifts at Christmas and I am delighted to report that all familes have been “adopted” at this time. If you want to help TP families, I’d suggest donating GIFT CARDS from local retailers (WalMart, Target, Jewel)- We pass these along to families in need and it enables them to guy what’s needed for a happy holiday, whether it’s a special gift, groceries, decorations or the ingredients for special family Christmas cookies.
- We are always in need for cold-weather gear for TP kids: Hats, mittens, gloves, scarves- all shapes and sizes.
