Volunteer Sybil Henk (Pictured above with one of the collection boxes) is heading up a push to collect cell phones for Turning Point. We turn in old cell phones (working or non-working) for cash from recyclers who strip out re-usable parts and precious metals from the phones. This also keeps old cell phones from winding up in landfills, which is a benefit for us all!
Sybil is placing boxes at area libraries and at MCC’s Promise Office, so look around, dig out those old phones and drop them in one of the recycling boxes!

Dear Friend of Turning Point,
We ask you to consider a donation to our Annual Auction
To be held Friday April 23rd, 2010
In the past, generous donations from local businesses like you have assisted in our efforts to confront violence against women & children in McHenry County. In 2009, as they have for over 28 years, our dedicated staff served thousands of women & children who walked through our doors or called in an effort to end violence in their lives & homes.
Our 28th annual Auction will be held on April 23rd, 2010. We are asking for your support. Your donated item will appear in our auction catalog that will be distributed to the attendees. Charity auctions like this one are a great opportunity to help your community and also an excellent way to reach new customers. This year, in addition to including all donors in our program, we will be listing them on our website. Turning Point is a registered not-for-profit (501C-3) corporation (#36-3163296) and your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law.
We thank you for your consideration in helping Turning Point continue to serve the families in our communities. Please feel free to send your donation directly to the address below or contact the Turning Point office at (815) 338-8081 to schedule a pick up.
Sincerely,
Joe Kvidera

What a great story in today’s Daily herald!
“Roughly a year ago, Carson (Pazden) decided he wanted to help provide food for other children. Working with his mother, he came up with the idea of a children’s cookbook as a fundraiser that would feature recipes submitted mostly by kids and would be geared toward beginner cooks.
“I just want to feed all of the hungry children,” Carson said of the project, which has raised more than $20,000 to help feed hungry kids.
Carson and his mother sought recipes from his school community, Countryside Elementary School in Barrington, as well as from their neighborhood, family and friends. They wrote away to celebrities and received recipes back from the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Maria Shriver, Chris O’Donnell and Sean Hayes.”
The whole story (and information on ordering the book) is at the Daily Herald.

As many long-time Turning Point folks know, we’re rather fond of a quote from Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
And sometimes, you can change the world almost by accident. “In October, [Michelle Chipman] was walking down the hall when she kicked an inflatable penguin…out of her way. (Son) Seven-year-old Colby… promptly advised her that kicking penguins was prohibited. He left the room for a minute, returned requesting Scotch Tape and then posted a hand-drawn sign — a woman kicking a penguin, in a circle with a diagonal line through it (as in a No Smoking sign). Written around the image was the decree Colby had issued earlier — “No kicking penguins.”
A few days later, that sign was posted amidst the world’s largest colony of penguins and “No Kicking Penguins” had become the official policy of Antarctica. How? You can read the unlikely chain of events here.

For the past 28 years, our Auction has been a major fundraiser for Turning Point. Proceeds from this auction will go to serve the people who walk through our doors in an effort to end the violence in their families. Imagine the way your donation can touch the lives of our clients!
We hope 200 people will attend this year’s auction. This program is indispensable to auction attendees; Not only does the program contain the evening program of events and all items up for bids, but it also lists all the names of organizations and individuals who support the Auction through gifts of time, products, or monetary donations. In addition, this year, for the first time, we will be featuring our program donors on our website so that even Turning Point supporters who cannot attend will know of your donation.

For the second year in a row, Turning Point, McHenry County’s only full-service domestic violence agency and shelter has received a $5000 grant from the TJX Foundation to fund emergency shelter needs for victims of domestic violence. The purpose of The TJX Foundation’s Giving Program is to support qualified, tax-exempt nonprofit organizations that provide services which promote and improve the quality of life for children, women and families in need. TJX Companies include Marshall’s, T. J. Maxx. HomeGoods and A.J. Wright.
The grant was initially requested by Annette Schmidt as a response to Star 105.5’s Take a Stand for Turning Point fundraiser in 2008. Pictured is Schmidt, store manager of the Crystal Lake Marshalls, (left) presenting the check to Turning Point’s Executive Director Jane Farmer.
