Woodstock High School Volunteers
From today’s Northwest Herald: “Woodstock High School seniors will spend today giving back to their community.
More than 200 students will participate in the school’s 14th annual Senior Service Day. From 8 a.m. to noon, students will go to 15 locations in Woodstock to perform a variety of beautification, clean up and other needed services.
Students will conduct roadside clean ups on Irving, Rose Farm and Lamb Roads, remove invasive species at specific properties, paint the sign at Bates Park and fountain by the Challenger Learning Center, clean up at Ryder’s Woods and Turning Point, and set up Woodstock Water Works.
Some students will visit District 200 elementary schools and local day care centers to provide assistance.
At each location, a crew chief will oversee the work. Overseeing the crew chiefs will be senior Casey Clemmons.”

Erica Lorez and TP Executive Director Jane Farmer
Turning Point presented the “Dream Weaver Award” to Star 105.5 Promotions Director Erica Lorenz at its annual auction held Friday April 23 at the Bull Valley Golf Club. The award was created to honor those volunteers whose actions inspire and motivate the staff and board of directors of the domestic violence agency.
Lorenz was honored for her work on “Take a Stand for Turning Point” the annual fund raiser held by Star 105.5 to benefit Turning Point. This year, the event will be held on August 6 & 7 broadcast live from Sam’s Club in Crystal Alake on Star 105.5.
During her presentation, Turning Point executive Director Jane Farmer praised Lorenz for her “Support and inspiration” and said “Every year during and immediately after the radiothon, we hear from victims who did not know help was available and who make that first step to end the abuse. And the person who helps to make that possible is Erica. She’s always working to make it better, to reach more people, to find new ways to spread the word.”

Interesting NW Herald story today:
“Bullies are often star athletes or popular girls considered charismatic leaders by peers and adults, experts say. What’s often missed or passed over as minor is a consistent pattern of control and aggression against other kids – behavior that socially savvy bullies can sometimes slide under the radar of grown-ups.
“It’s not what we typically think of. It’s not always the kid who’s pushing kids down on the playground,” says Rosalind Wiseman, who wrote “Queen Bees and Wannabes,” the basis for the movie “Mean Girls.”
“It’s children who feel like they’re the law of their school, that they have the right to set the law and if you challenge their power, like hooking up with the wrong boy, they have the right to put you in your place.””

An awful story in today’s Tribune:
A Wonder Lake-area man was being held on felony child and domestic battery charges after the McHenry County sheriff’s department said his infant child was hospitalized in critical condition with suspicious bruising and other injuries. Gavin J.B. Daly, 26, of the 8900 block of Shady Lane in unincorporated McHenry County, was being held on a $250,000 bond. At press time, the child was on a respirator at a Milwaukee hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

“Why this former skinhead gang leader decided to disavow the white supremacy ideology of hate and violence and preach racial harmony (to children, no less) is a tale of transformation that goes way deeper than Meeink’s physical appearance and into territory even he couldn’t have imagined when he was terrorizing non-whites and gays.
It’s a long haul that would take him from his south Philadelphia neighborhood to the Illinois prison system, where he would share some of the most intimate details of his life with black and Hispanic inmates.
A great story from the Chicago Tribune.

A horrifying story from today’s Daily Herald:
“A 20-year-old ex-Marine accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend in the back with a bayonet Wednesday night at Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee Wednesday night told a judge this morning that he was discharged from the service because he had suicidal thoughts.
William R. Clark III, 20, of Algonquin, appeared before Kane County Judge Bruce W. Lester via closed-circuit TV this morning and could barely look at a TV monitor that showed his parents crying in the courtroom as they watched the proceedings.
“I’m sorry,” Clark told his parents.
Clark said he was in the U.S. Marines from January through October in 2008 and was training in San Diego to become a military police officer.
But he was discharged because he had suicidal thoughts and wanted to “hurt myself,” he said. He is now unemployed.”

From the Northwest Herald:
”Donations to the United Way of McHenry County are down about $474,000 compared to last year’s annual fund-raising campaign.
The umbrella charitable organization anticipates a cut of a least 9 percent to the 27 social service agencies that it helps fund. Last year, those agencies provided services to about 85,000 McHenry County residents.
The United Way also is far from reaching its goal. The United Way hoped to raise as much as $1.825 million, but so far has raised $1.336 million – a shortfall of about 26.8 percent.
United Way officials had anticipated slightly more donations than last year, instead it appears the annual campaign actually will result in less contributions. In a statement, the United Way of McHenry County said that even if all outstanding accounts report the same fund-raising results as last year, the United Way would only raise an additional $400,000 – still well below last year’s results.”
Visit the United Way McHenry County site for more infromation.
