International Women’s Day 2010

Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

Organisations, governments and women’s groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues. This year, the theme chosen by the United Nations is “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls.”

This is by no means the only or “Official” theme. It is completely up to each country and group as to what appropriate theme they select.

Locally, there will be a cross-cultural women’s symposium featuring women from diverse cultures and backgrounds who are leaders in their fields. The objective is to recognize and heighten awareness of women’s issues within a cross-cultural forum and highlight common threads among different cultures. The events is being held at St. Andrews Church SJ Gregory Auditorium 5649 N. Sheridan Road, Chicago, 60660, on 6 March 2010 9.30 to 2.30. More information is available at the sponsor’s National Hellenic Museum website

Also, Turning Point Offices WILL BE CLOSED Monday in honor of International Women’s Day. AS ALWAYS, though, help is available 24/7/365 by calling 800-892-8900.
