Turning Point of McHenry County, Illinois

How it Began

In 1981, three women gathered in a kitchen after one woman had been beaten by her husband. She went to court for help but was told it was a family problem, and that she needed to go home and deal with it.

A stress line was started from that kitchen meeting allowing victims of Domestic Violence to call someone for support. These women believed that violence and abuse in the home was never okay and should never be tolerated.

Concerned volunteers came forward and began working in the community to address the issue of violence against women.

Turning Point opened the doors as a walk in Domestic Violence agency, initially providing individual and group counseling, legal and non-legal advocacy to battered women, and then adding children's services and childcare.

With a mission to confront violence against women and children, the Alternatives to Violence/Abuse program began.

All neighborhoods have batterers and abused spouses, partners, and families. Today, all McHenry County 's neighborhoods have Turning Point.

Turning Point has served the needs of domestic violence victims for more than twenty-five years, and strives to maintain programs, safety, and an environment that exhibits concern for each individual, including its clients, volunteers, professional associates, and staff members.
